How to choose a remote control slope mower: slope, cutting width, track type, cutter design, certification, container loading and spare parts when buying from a China supplier.
A remote control mower is not a scaled-down ride-on. It is a vegetation tool for ground where an operator should not sit: orchard banks, road embankments, dam walls and solar farms. Four numbers decide the purchase: slope, width, weight and power. The rest is paperwork.
Measure the slope before you compare models
Every supplier quotes a maximum climbing angle, measured on a dry test ramp. Treat it as a ceiling, not a target. Walk the site with a phone inclinometer against a one-metre straight edge and record the steepest sustained ten metres, not the average: a bank averaging 20 degrees with a 32-degree section is a 32-degree site, and the machine must hold it in wet grass at the end of the season.
Check gate widths and row spacing as carefully as gradient: a machine that cannot reach the bank is useless. If the ground is flat and the grass short, a ride-on or tow-behind cuts faster for less money. Remote control earns its price above roughly 20 degrees, near a drop, or where obstacles make a seated operator a risk.
Cutting width decides the work rate
Area rate is width multiplied by forward speed, discounted for turns, overlap and obstacles. A one-metre deck at 3 km/h covers about 3,000 square metres an hour in theory and 2,000 at realistic efficiency. A 550 mm deck covers roughly half, so it needs twice the hours for the same bank.
| Class | Cutting width | Typical engine | Machine weight | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compact | 500–600 mm | 6.5–10 hp gasoline | 100–200 kg | Orchard rows, between trees, gates under one metre |
| Mid | 750–900 mm | 10–16 hp gasoline or diesel | 200–350 kg | Roadside banks, solar farms, fenced embankments |
| Wide | 1,000–1,200 mm | 16–24 hp gasoline, diesel or hybrid | 300–550 kg | Large open slopes and contract mowing |
A wider deck is heavier, harder to trailer and more likely to scalp; on soft pasture the extra weight costs traction.
Tracked or wheeled, and the cutter that suits the vegetation
Tracked machines hold a side slope better: long contact patch, low centre of gravity. The trade-offs are turf damage, slow travel and track maintenance. Wheeled machines are faster, cheaper and gentler on turf, but slip earlier on wet grass; four-wheel drive narrows the gap without closing it on a 30-degree bank.
The cutter matters as much. Rotary decks with swing blades cut fast and handle tall grass, but throw debris and need intact shielding. Flail heads mulch finer and throw less, at the cost of more power per centimetre. Mulcher heads take saplings and brush, and are slowest.
| Cutter type | Vegetation | Finish | Debris risk | Power demand |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rotary swing-blade | Grass, weeds, light brush | Medium | High | Moderate |
| Flail | Grass to heavy weeds, small saplings | Fine mulch | Low | High per cm of width |
| Mulcher head | Saplings and dense brush | Coarse | Low | Highest |
Engine, fuel and what the remote control must do
Gasoline engines from 6.5 to 24 hp are common: light, easy to refuel, cheap to service. Diesel suits contractors on long shifts, with better consumption and longer intervals, at more weight and cost. Hybrid and battery-drive machines use electric traction motors for finer control on slopes, but runtime is finite and the charger must match local voltage.
Remote range is quoted in open air; expect less behind a hedge. Insist on a signal-loss stop, emergency stops on both machine and transmitter, and a control box rated for rain and dust.
How to vet a remote control mower supplier in China
China has manufacturers and trading companies selling similar-looking machines, and the difference shows in the controller, wiring loom and steel two seasons later. Ask for the business licence, a walk-through of the assembly line, and a test video on a real slope with a tape measure in frame.
- Confirm whether the seller manufactures or resells, and who supplies the engine and controller
- Book a third-party pre-shipment inspection for orders above a few units
- Agree payment terms in writing; 30% deposit and 70% before shipment is common, letter of credit for large orders
- Get a spare parts list with part numbers before paying the deposit
- Get warranty terms in English, on paper
Certification, HS code and the paperwork that stops shipments
Four factors decide whether the machine can be exported to your country and cleared: the HS code, the certificate of origin, the engine emissions regime, and the wood packaging declaration. Mowers for lawns, parks and sports grounds usually fall under HS 8433.11 where the cutting device rotates about a horizontal axis, with 8433.19 for other types. Have your own broker confirm the code before booking freight: it drives both duty treatment and which regulator inspects the machine.
Europe expects a CE declaration and a machinery directive file. The United States requires EPA, often CARB, approval for spark-ignition engines; other markets reference one of the two. Battery machines add a charger question: 110 V at 60 Hz for North America, 230 V at 50 Hz elsewhere, plug fitted at the factory. Packing needs ISPM 15 marks, and tracked machines should ship clean of soil.
Container loading, lead time and spare parts
A one-metre class mower crates to roughly 1.4 by 1.3 by 0.6 metres, so a 40-foot high cube carries a batch with room for a spares crate. Ask for loading photos and a supervised report. Production runs 25 to 40 days after deposit, plus 25 to 45 days at sea. Lithium battery units may be classed as dangerous goods, so confirm the mode with the forwarder before packing.
Order consumables with the machine: blades and bolts, belts, filters, plugs, and for tracked units a track, roller and drive motor. Confirm how a replacement controller is paired and whether the factory supports it by video call.
Checklist before you place the order
- Steepest sustained slope measured in the wet season
- Cutting width matched to gate width and row spacing
- Cutter type matched to the vegetation actually on site
- Tracked or wheeled decided on surface, not on price alone
- Signal-loss stop and dual emergency stop demonstrated on video
- Emission certificate matches the engine actually fitted
- HS code and duty treatment confirmed by your own broker
- Spares kit, part numbers and warranty terms in writing
