A used mini excavator can look like half the cost of a new one until you price the wear 台. Here is how to compare them on the same basis, and what to inspect before you pay.
A used mini excavator is often offered at a fraction of the new price. Sometimes that is a genuine bargain. Sometimes it is a machine with 4,000 hours on the clock, a worn final drive and a hydraulic pump that is already tired. The only way to tell the difference is to compare both options on the same basis.
Compare total cost, not sticker price
Put four numbers side by side before deciding:
| Cost item | New machine | Used machine |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | Full list price | Lower, but varies wildly with hours and condition |
| Immediate repairs | None expected | Tracks, hoses, pins, battery, seals |
| Warranty | Typically 12 months or more | Usually none, or 30–90 days from a dealer |
| Resale after 3 年 | Predictable depreciation curve | Depends heavily on the hours you add |
A used unit that needs a new set of tracks and a pump rebuild in the first year can close most of the gap. Ask for the repair history in writing, not verbally.
Hours are a guide, not the answer
Hour meters can be replaced, disconnected or rolled back. Treat the reading as one input among several:
- 0–1,500 hours: usually still tight; check for damage rather than wear
- 1,500–3,500 hours: normal wear 台 start to appear — tracks, hoses, pins
- 3,500–6,000 hours: hydraulic pump and final drives become the question
- 6,000+ hours: buy on condition and price only, expect rebuilds
Cross-check the meter against the wear you can see. A machine showing 900 hours with heavily worn sprockets has either worked in abrasive ground or has an honest-looking lie on the dashboard.
Seven things to inspect on a used unit
- Track condition — measure remaining lug height and check for cuts and embedded wire. Rubber tracks that are cracked through will fail soon.
- Sprocket and idler wear — hooked teeth mean a track replacement is close.
- Pin and bushing play — grab the bucket and rock it. Visible slop means a re-bush job.
- Hydraulic leaks — look at cylinder rods for scoring and at the pump area for fresh oil.
- Hose condition — cracked outer covers near fittings are the ones that burst under pressure.
- Structural cracks — boom, arm and blade mounts. Paint hides cracks poorly; look at weld toes.
- Engine blow-by — open the oil filler cap while running; heavy vapour points to worn rings.
What you cannot inspect from photos
Hydraulic pressure, cycle times and engine compression need a gauge and a warm machine. If you are buying remotely, insist on a short video showing: cold start, full boom cycle, travel in both directions, and the hour meter with the machine running.
For container shipments, ask for the machine to be photographed on all four sides at loading, plus the hour meter, with the date visible.
When used makes sense
- Seasonal or occasional work under roughly 500 hours a year
- Rental fleet where cosmetic condition matters less than function
- A second machine for a specific attachment
- You have a competent mechanic and a parts channel
When new makes sense
- Daily production work where a breakdown costs a contract
- Emission-regulated markets where an older engine cannot be registered
- Financing or leasing is available on new but not used
- You need documented warranty for resale value
Negotiating points that actually move the price
Bring a written list: track wear, hose condition, missing attachments, tyre or track type, service records, and any leak found. Sellers discount fastest when the defect is named and photographed. Vague comments about "general wear" rarely move the number.
Checklist before payment
- Hour meter photographed while running
- Repair and service records, in writing
- Wear 台 measured, not estimated
- Cold start and full function video
- Serial number matched to the invoice
- Emission standard confirmed against your market
- Shipping, duty and certification costs included in the comparison
