Choose mini excavator tonnage from the digging task, not the budget: 1 to 1.8 tonnes suits trenching and landscaping, 2.5 to 3.5 tonnes suits utility and general construction work, and 5 to 8 tonnes is the entry point for serious earthmoving and hard ground. The weight class decides dig depth, reach, bucket capacity and transport method all at once, so getting it wrong is expensive in either direction.

What size mini excavator do I need for my jobsite?

Match the class to the three numbers that define your work: maximum dig depth, the width of the access you must pass through, and the daily volume of material you need to move. Depth and access set the minimum, volume sets the optimum, and transport capacity usually sets the ceiling.

How do the weight classes actually differ?

Each step up in class adds roughly 0.5 to 1 m of dig depth, 15 to 25 percent more bucket capacity and 60 to 150 more kilogrammes of machine weight, and that last number is what changes how you move the machine between sites. The performance gains are real, but so is the transport penalty.

What can a 1 to 1.8 tonne mini excavator actually do?

A 1.8 tonne machine digs to about 2.4 m, lifts roughly 500 to 700 kg at close radius, and passes through a 1 m gate — which is why it is the standard choice for landscaping, residential drainage and rental fleets. It is also light enough for a 3.5 tonne trailer behind a normal pickup, so one operator can move it without hiring transport.

The limit is not depth, it is cycle time. On compacted clay or hard aggregate, a 1.8 tonne machine spends most of its time chipping rather than lifting, and daily output drops sharply. If half your work is in unbroken ground, the next class up will finish the same job in 60 percent of the hours.

When is a smaller machine the wrong choice?

Two situations. First, if you need to load trucks: a 1 tonne machine can take 30 to 45 minutes to fill a small tipper that a 3.5 tonne machine fills in 12. Second, if the trench must be deeper than 2.5 m, because you will end up benching the sides, which costs more than the tonnage you saved.

When should you step up to 3.5 to 5 tonnes?

Step up when you need to break compacted ground, dig deeper than 3 m, or load trucks at commercial rates, because breakout force and stability — not reach — become the limiting factors. A 3.5 tonne machine roughly doubles bucket capacity against a 1.8 tonne unit and can carry a hydraulic breaker productively.

That class also changes your logistics. A 3.5 tonne machine needs a 5 to 7 tonne trailer or a small truck, and a 5 tonne machine usually needs a low-bed truck and, in some countries, a movement permit. Work out the transport cost per move before committing, and remember that a machine you avoid moving because transport is awkward is a machine that is not earning.

Does the attachment decide the tonnage?

Yes, and this is the most common sizing error: a hydraulic breaker, auger or thumb that is oversized for the carrier will destroy the dipper arm, while an undersized one will not do the job. Always confirm the attachment weight and oil flow requirement against the machine specification before ordering.

Tracked or wheeled?

Tracks win on soft ground, slopes and stability; wheels win on hard surfaces and road travel between nearby sites. Most buyers under 3 tonnes choose tracks, since a wheeled machine still needs a trailer for anything beyond a short road move, and tracks handle mud, sand and gravel far better.

Above 5 tonnes the choice is almost always tracks. Below 1.5 tonnes, some operators prefer a wheeled or a zero-tail-swing tracked machine for work inside existing buildings, where the ability to work against a wall without rotating the counterweight matters more than traction. Can a mini excavator dig a foundation for a house?

Yes, for a normal residential strip or pad foundation. A 2.5 to 3.5 tonne machine reaches the 1 to 1.5 m depth and handles the trench width comfortably. For a basement or a foundation on rock, you need a larger class or a breaker, and possibly a 5 tonne machine.

How deep can a 1.8 tonne mini excavator dig?

Typically 2.2 to 2.6 m with the standard arm, and slightly more with a long arm option. Practical working depth is about 80 percent of the maximum, because you need room to swing and to place spoil clear of the trench.

Is a larger machine always more productive?

No. In tight access, a large machine cannot reach the work at all, and its cycle time is wasted repositioning. Productivity follows how well the machine fits the site, which is why job type and access width come before tonnage in the specification.

What is zero-tail-swing and do I need it?

Zero-tail-swing means the counterweight stays within the track width when the cab rotates, so the machine can work flush against a wall, fence or road lane. You need it for urban work, lane closures and interior demolition. It costs 5 to 10 percent more than a conventional model.
